Memories of George & Merle

I don’t remember the first time I heard them, but I remember the feeling – joy, comfort, and silliness. Shared with my father and a small group of friends. The songs were entertaining, sad, funny, somber, and silly.

I grew up with Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and The Four Tops. But George was the first I considered to be a hero. I called him “the king of rock ‘n’ roll.” When he signed a copy of his memoir for me, that was his inscription. I cherish that book.

Thankfully, I had the opportunity to see him perform live at Mohegan Sun. It was a dream come true. I never had the chance to see Merle Haggard perform in-person.

He passed away today on his 79th birthday. Thank you for your music, and the memories, Merle. I cherish those, as well.
