Memories of New Canaan’s Modern Homes

Recently, I’ve shared some of my favorite homes (they all just happened to be modern). Some of them are located in my hometown of New Canaan, but most of them are scattered across the globe. However, New Canaan is home of a plethora of mid-century modern homes and I have been lucky – more than – to be able to tour a great number of them – some have sold, some have been remodeled, and some have not changed a thing; but they are all unique, inspiring, and inviting.

You won’t find many brutalist homes, here, as the reclusive nature of these structures does not equate to an open home nor make for open conversations in such a small community. The town values nature and takes conservation and protection very seriously and, as such, modern homes are a natural fit due to their minimal footprint. But it’s not just their size – the layout of many modern residences also allow for greater energy efficiency. The lower ceilings and flatter rooves of modern residences require less energy to heat and cool.

And during my time as a volunteer with the New Canaan Modern House Tour, I met several of the architects and interior designers that brought these homes to life – and just like their creations, each and every one of them is unique, inspiring, and inviting. Here’s a sampling of some of the homes:

Celanese House – Edward Durell Stone

Boissonnas House – Philip Johnson

Noyes House II – Eliott Noyes

Mills House II – Willis N. Mills

Evans House – James Evans

There are many, many more modern homes in New Canaan that I would love to share; however, some are residences of family and friends, and out of concern for their privacy I have omitted them. There are far too many to list here, but there are some wonderful resources to help you find out more about them. And if you want to see them in-person, the only way is to take a trip to southwestern CT!
