Memories of My Favorite Homes – Pt. 3

Earlier in my Blog, I shared the story of my time with interior designer Jens Risom as well as some of my favorite residences. Here are more properties that have had a positive impact on me:

Rantilla Residence – Michael Rantilla, Phil Freelon
This home has one of my favorite elements of any home – a raised deck that meets with the home’s second floor as well as the apex of a nearby hill that engenders a ‘floating’ feeling, almost as though one is a part of a canopy, of sorts. The immense usage of glass and minimalistic walls make this home a favorite of mine.

Stepped Concrete House (TOTO) – Álvaro Siza Vieira
This home is just pure brilliance. Although brutalist elements and features, chiefly the usage of concrete, can be off-putting to some – if not many – I adore the way this home becomes its environment and invites frequent travel throughout its many spaces.

Shell House – artechnic
This flowing residence incorporates some hallmark brutalist elements of the architects, but remains a peaceful and unobtrusive to the surrounding woodlands.

Falling Water – Frank Lloyd Wright – PA
This home needs neither an introduction nor explanation. Sadly, I have not yet had the opportunity to visit, although I have had the pleasure of seeing his New Canaan, CT residence along with other public buildings, but not Falling Water.

Slit House – AZL Architects
To be honest, I don’t love this house, as a whole. I’m not a fan of limiting entrances for natural light, especially at eye level. And while its exterior color is rather intense, it blends in with its surroundings very well and occupies its allotted space with grace, elegance, and, at times, subtlety. I adore the minimalist interior as well as the maze-like shapes created by the home’s exterior.

Shaw House – Patkau Architects
