Memories of Jens Risom

Earlier in my blog, I shared the story of the day I spent with architect John Johansen and his work. It was an unforgettable and fulfilling experience, as was my time with interior designer Jens Risom. I had the same opportunity to spend hours with Mr. Risom at his home and with a great deal of his work.

Originally from Denmark, Mr. Risom’s roots are on full display through his clean, minimalistic approach to design coupled with a great deal of functionality. His classic mid-century modern chairs and amoebic tables inspired countless reproductions.

However, I believe Mr. Risom’s newspaper rack/table combination is the best example of his iconic style and my favorite work of his, by far.

During our time together, Mr. Risom could not have been more kind, knowledgeable, or funnier. Both he and his wife treated me as family and shared insights into their lives that only served to deepen the immense respect I already had for them. Their contributions to our community have been tremendous, and I am so thankful to have had this experience.

Mr. Risom’s Block Island vacation home is a sight to behold, as well. It’s centralized layout provides consistent face-to-face interaction with its inhabitants and mimics elements of his interior design work. It also serves as an homage to the creativity of former New Canaanite John Johansen’s Bridge House in Dutchess County, NY.

Some of Mr. Risom’s pieces are available for purchase via auction and at brick and mortar locations, but the best way to see the genius of Jens Risom is in-person (for free!) is on display in the living room – now the Jens Risom Room – of the Gores Pavilion in Irwin Park in New Canaan, CT. It is the largest publcollection available
